Robert Edward “Ted” Turner III was born in November 19th, 1938, in Missouri to Florence and Robert Turner. He was the eldest of five children. Turner attended college at Brown University. During his time there he earned a degree in Classics and was also captain of the sailing team. After graduating, Turner moved to Savannah Georgia to take over his father’s billboard business.

In 1970, Turner purchased a UHF television station in Atlanta, Georgia, WJRJ-TV. He renamed the station, WTBS, and it would go on to become one of the earliest superstations.
