Early Life and Education
Conrad Nicholson Hilton was born on December 25, 1887 in San Antonio, New Mexico. He was the son of parents August and Magdalena Hilton, who were both strongly religious and lavished their children with love. As a young boy, Conrad was a bright student, who was particularly talented in languages. After graduating from high school, he attended the New Mexico School of Mines and the University of Arizona, where he was active in the debate team. He had a passion for business from a young age, which eventually led him to start his own hotel business in 1919.
Career
Hilton’s career began in 1913 with his purchase of the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas. The Mobley was the first of many hotels he purchased throughout the years. After finding success with his first hotel, he went on to purchase more, enabling him to expand his hotel business. Hilton eventually took control of his family’s hotel business, and the company was transformed from the former Dallas Hilton Hotel into a conglomerate company known as the Hilton Hotels Corporation.
The Hilton Worldwide brand was born in 1947, when the company of a similar name was formed. From there, Hilton focused on further expanding the business by making strategic acquisitions of several other hotels. Under Hilton’s leadership, the Hilton Company went public in 1964 and went onto achieve great success.
